Removing Azure AD Photos

Main Post:

Hi everyone, I'm having some issues and Microsoft support don't seem to be getting anywhere with it -

We had our AD Connect set to sync the ThumbnailPhoto attribute to AAD (unfortunately) which apparently uploaded the images to AAD (where they are not visible for most people, and the majority of the ones who are visible don't error), and now on every AAD export it tries to re-import these images that are too large (despite the AAD photo size requirement being far smaller than AD) - with the error 'ExceededAllowedLength'.

I've gone into the connectors and set it to not sync those attributes either way, as well as setting new sync rules to set those attributes to the recommended 'AuthoritativeNull' set to either update and replace but that still doesn't seem to be doing anything and errors have stayed the same.

There seem to be Get- and Set-AzureADUserThumbnailPhoto cmdlets, but I can't find a way to simply remove them - setting to $null doesn't work.

These sync errors are delaying a new software that relies on successful AAD syncs, are there any suggestions for what I could try next while waiting for Microsoft's response?

Can you not change the photos to something smaller, and re-sync?

AD profile pictures not updating. SP2019 on-prem

Main Post:

I have been struggling with getting AD profile pictures onto my Sharepoint 2019 install. I am trying to avoid using MIM as we aren't using it elsewhere.

I have run this script: https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/SharePoint-User-Profile-928b39c0 which finds all of the photos and copies them to my sharepoint User Photos/Profile Pictures directory, but they don't show up on the profiles. I am not getting any errors running that script and everything seems right. When i run the Update-SPProfilePhotoStore with location and create thumbnails included it doesn't give any errors or any output.

I have made sure thumbnailPhoto is mapped in the Picture user property. I have made sure CrossDomainPhotosEnabled is true. I have made sure Replicating Directory Change is enabled on the account running this script. I have cleared search indexes, done full crawls, and full user profile imports numerous times with no luck.

Is installing and using MIM my only option, or has anyone else been able to make this work?

-edit. I'm not sure if this matters, but the photos are put into AD via codetwo AD photos app.

Top Comment: You need MIM for images. One of the mods @Trevorishere has a really good guide on his blog to set it up, highly recommend Edit: https://thesharepointfarm.com/2016/03/basic-mim-configuration-support-sharepoint-2016/ Above is the link
